First Grade News - Ms. Costello

One of the spirit week themes is Crazy Hair/Hat Day. This day falls on the day of our winter show performance. It is up to you if you would like your child to participate in this theme on performance day. Please also make sure your child is dressed up for the performance (Ms. White says no jeans, please) :)
Events this week:
Monday - Winter Attendance Challenge Dance Party
Wednesday - Class party - Pajamas/movie
Thursday - Winter Show Performance 2 PM
Friday - Winter Celebration hosted by Room 101 parents
We will continue literacy stations, and will continue middle of year reading benchmark testing. I will test about half of the class before winter break, and the other half of the class after we return from break in January. When your child is tested, you will receive a sheet explaining what their reading level is as well as different strategies you can work on at home to support your child in literacy.
In literacy this week, we will read articles about two more winter holidays: Hanukkah and St. Lucia. We will discuss the main idea of the texts using details, and answer comprehension questions using information from the text.
Spelling/Phonics: s blends. Test 12/18.
Sight Words: Words 71-80. Test during the week of 12/18.

Social Studies - We will continue a unit on families and communities.
Writing - We will continue to practice editing our writing for spacing, capital letters, and punctuation.
