It was great seeing so many of you at our third quarter conferences! Our class had 97% participation! That is fantastic!!! We have also had 100% attendance two days in a row...three more consecutive days and we will earn an extra 20 minutes recess on Friday!
Our last reading story in the Animal Habitats unit is Crinkleroot's Guide to Animal Habitats. This expository text explores various types of animal habitats such as wetlands, prairies, desserts and woodlands. The reading skill of the week is comparing and contrasting various text components and our reading strategy is rereading text for improving fluency and understanding.
In science, we are analyzing the structures of crayfish and bess beetles. Both have exoskeletons and physical attributes that are similar. However one is a crustacean and the other is an insect. We will also be comparing and contrasting these two creatures' attributes. Towards the end of the week we will be constructing the habitat for our class's bess beetles that will arrive during the week of May 1st.
We are completing our civics and citizenship unit in social studies. We will be reading a play and analyzing the various acts. Each act highlights one specific way citizens can demonstrate their good citizenship and showcase how one can participate in the democratic process.
During third quarter conferences I shared information about our BIG end of the year project- Our Living Wax Museum! Several dates to keep in mind- April 27th is the due date for selecting a person to research. May 24th is the due date for returning the display board. We will have our open house during the first week of June where the children will present their speeches and each historical figure will come alive during our Living wax Museum!
Your child will complete his or her final expository essay focusing on the three branches of government this week. Children will be assessed based on our writing rubric that was shared in a previous post. We will also be reviewing various types of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives & adverbs).
Your child has access to more IXL components for the remainder of this year! Please have your child access and explore ALL of the subjects that are now available. In previous years, Dever students only used the math section. Each child now has access to many more content areas. I would highly encourage each child to use this as an extension lesson or to challenge themselves with new content that interests them!
I hope everyone had a great weekend and enjoyed the fantastic weather! I was able to get out and run along the beautiful lakefront and then visit the zoo! As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. I look forward to the amazing learning opportunities that are ahead of us in the 4th quarter!
