Blast off! We our learning all about the moon this week. Our next reading story, Journey to the Moon, concentrates on finding text evidence to support answers, using captions to find information and identifying facts and opinions.
We are in our third week of our novel study units. There are four books currently being read, your child is responsible for one of the four. The books are Mrs. Piggle Wiggle's Magic, The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, Freckle Juice & How to Eat Fried Worms. Each week your child will be assigned a set of comprehension questions to check for his/her understanding of the text.
Our spelling pattern of the week focuses on the following suffixes; -ity, -sion, -less & -ness.
Please check to make sure your child is completing the required weekly Tic-Tac-Spell.
In social studies we will learn about the landmarks, events and artifacts that have made a significant impact on the development and history of the United States. This week we will continue to look at Yellowstone & other National Parks, as well as, the Veteran's Day.
We will also discuss the properties and qualities of each planet during our science instruction. We will make a diagram of the solar system, create bar graphs and Venn Diagrams comparing the planets' qualities and read expository texts about the solar system. Additionally, our Bess Beetles should arrive this week. Your child will get to observe Bess Beetles' structures and behaviors. He or she will be able to interact with them and see how they interact in different environments and situations.
In other news, I have posted very important information about our upcoming NWEA spring testing. Our reading assessment is May 24th & math will be on May 30. See my previous posts for additional details.
The Wax Museum Project is due on May 25th! Please make sure your child completes all the necessary components that should appear on their display board. All sheets were given out during parent-teacher conferences.

If your child is at school all five days of the week, he or she is automatically enrolled in the raffle. Winners are announced each Monday. Last week, our school had two of the school's four winners!!!
Field day is quickly approaching, we are looking forward to our walking field trip to Hiawatha Park on June 7th for fun activities and lunch!
In closing, I would just like to thank you all for the cards, treats, and special gifts that I received during Teacher Appreciation Week. I truly appreciate the kind words and generosity that was shared. It has been such a pleasure having your kids in Room 210 this year!
