We are blasting off into space! Our next reading unit is the Sun, Moon & Stars. We will be reading several expository texts (with a few narrative) about the solar system. Our reading story of the week is "Sun" which shares many interesting facts about the sun and its importance and relevance in our solar system- The Milky Way.
We have also begun our novel study units. During the next month your child will be participating in an in-depth novel study. The four books being used include- The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler, How to Eat Fried Worms, Freckle Juice, & Mrs. Piggle Miggle's Magic. Your child will be reading only one of the previously mentioned texts. each student will have to read a specific chapter as part of his or her homework each night.
In science, we are completing our Structures of Life unit notes. Throughout the week we will be reviewing our notes and completing our final plant experiments. We are graphing the growth of our plants in our hydroponic containers. Currently we are examining the bush bean currently in Week 7 of our investigation. Our Bess Beetles will arrive during the week of May 15th. With that delay in delivery, we will be completing our current unit assessment and then transfer to the Solar System Science unit. Once the beetles arrive we will then take a week to explore the Bess Beetles' behavior and physical attributes.
This week in social studies we will complete our Citizenship and Civics unit. The students will hear various expository texts about voting, the Presidency, the Senate, theHouse of Representatives & the Supreme Court. They will listen to me read aloud booklet and then write down one interesting fact and something new that they have now learned after my reading.
Our Wax Museum research project is currently being done during our writing block. Your child has selected a notable figure to research, using our classroom technology we are compiling biographical information to use on their display boards. Everything your child completes in school can be transferred into their final projects. All boards should be completed on or before May 25th.
We have so many awesome things to complete this week! As always, please feel free to contact me about any questions or concerns.
With thanks- Mr. Rosenstiel
