I hope you all had a wonderful long weekend! The weather could not have been nicer. As for myself, I ran my 17th marathon (10th Chicago Marathon). Even though my feet hurt and my legs are sore, it was well worth all the hard work and determination. I have used my running experiences to both motivate my students to work hard towards their own personal goals ,as well as, in persevering through adversity to achieve them.
On Tuesday, we have our first field trip to Naper Settlement in Naperville. This is an extension of our Illinois history social studies unit. We will examine how early settlers lived and how they utilized the prairies that are so prevalent in Illinois. PLEASE make sure that your child has a bag/sack lunch for this trip.
This week we will continue our novel study on the book- Frindle. Each night your child should reread the chapter we worked on for that day. This is done for fluency practice and to build comprehension of the text. Additionally, students are assigned specific questions that night to reinforce these skills. This Friday the children will be assessed over chapters 1-5.
In the first quarter we are concentrating on our narrative writing unit. This week we will focus on the use of transition words to link paragraphs, as well as sentences within them. Also this week, we will practice using editing and revision marks (carrots, cut & pastes).
Your child has a Spellingcity account. Please have them use this resource to practice his or her spelling words. The lists are provided and posted on the first day of the week and then tested on the last. Due to our shortened week and our field trip, we will not have the spelling test this week. It will occur on October 20th.
Every math group is working on adding and subtracting larger numbers. In 210 math, we are focusing on subtracting numbers with regrouping. Many of the problems will regroup over zeros. Our students spend at least 10 minutes per day on their IXL accounts to reinforce the concepts we are working on in their journals. This week students should work towards completing the 4th grade B topics.
