I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to our school's new website. I am extremely excited to set up our classroom blog. Each week I would like to share with you the important and exciting news about the units we are studying, as well as, any pertinent information that you may find useful.
As we start our 3rd quarter I would like to reiterate that our third grade students are still expected to complete their 20 minutes (minimum) of required nightly reading. They are also asked to record their minutes on their Just Read sheet.
Our current guided reading unit is entitled- "Money", students will also utilize the Daily 5 format by reading to self, read with a partner, listen to reading, word work, and work on independent writing. Students will also continue to work on differentiated reading assignments to help strengthen their reading fluency and comprehension but more importantly nurture their love of reading!
All third grade teachers will reinforce mastery of multiplication facts. Our third grade math classes will also begin studying fractions and geometric concepts. Our students have many online programs to help master these concepts. In 210 math we use both Xtramath.org & IXL.com.
During science instruction we will explore the properties of water! Students have already examined water as both a liquid and solid. Currently, we are conducting several evaporation experiments. All of the experiments in this unit demonstrate that water is a special natural resource that can uniquely take the form of all three states of matter.
We are extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in our newest economics unit provided by - First American Bank. All three third grade classes will explore the activities of Money Island! They will be introduced to many important economic terms such as saving, spending, investing & giving. The program has both direct teacher instruction with a balance of an online component. An informational flyer went home on Feb. 15th to explain this program in more detail.
We have much to learn in the third quarter! I look forward to all the great adventures that are before us.
